The Right Image Sizes for Web, Social Media and Email

Uploading a photo straight from your camera rarely works. Every platform has its own ideal dimensions, and getting them wrong means blurry uploads, awkward crops, or slow pages. This guide collects the sizes that matter.

Websites and Blogs

  • Hero images: 1920 × 1080 px
  • Blog post covers: 1200 × 630 px (also the standard for social sharing cards)
  • Inline content images: 800–1200 px wide
  • Thumbnails: 300–400 px wide

Social Media

  • Instagram square post: 1080 × 1080 px
  • Instagram portrait: 1080 × 1350 px
  • Facebook shared image: 1200 × 630 px
  • YouTube thumbnail: 1280 × 720 px
  • X/Twitter post image: 1600 × 900 px

Email

Keep email images under 600 px wide and under 200 KB each. Many mail clients block or delay heavy images, and mobile data users will thank you.

Avoid the Stretch Trap

Never change width without changing height proportionally — that is how you get squashed faces. Use a tool that locks the aspect ratio, or crop to the exact ratio you need first, then resize.

Export Smart

After resizing, compress the result. A properly sized and compressed image loads instantly and still looks crisp on high-density screens.
