Add a Draft Watermark to PDF Without Obscuring the Text

A draft label helps readers distinguish work in progress from an approved version. A watermark should communicate that status without making a contract, table, or diagram difficult to read. The right balance depends on the actual page content, so inspection matters more than one supposedly perfect opacity value.

Watermark PDF at /pdf-tools/watermark adds a text stamp to every page of the selected file. It is a visible label, not a password, access restriction, or technical prevention of copying. A determined recipient may still modify the document or recreate its contents.

Choose a short, meaningful label

DRAFT, REVIEW COPY, and INTERNAL are easier to fit than a long sentence. If the purpose is version control, consider whether the filename and accompanying message should also identify the draft date or review stage. A watermark alone cannot tell a reader which of several drafts is current.

Do not use a confidentiality label as a substitute for sending a file through an appropriate channel. The stamp explains intent but does not enforce who can open the file.

Adjust opacity and size together

Opacity controls how strongly the watermark covers the content beneath it. Begin with a light setting that is available in the tool and inspect the saved result. Increase it only enough to make the status easy to notice. Dense tables may need a subtler mark than mostly empty presentation slides.

Font size also affects readability. A very large word can cross many small characters even when its opacity is low. A very small word may be missed. Use a short label with an appropriately restrained size rather than solving poor visibility by making everything darker.

Apply the watermark

  • Open Watermark PDF at /pdf-tools/watermark and select the document.
  • Enter the intended label in the text field.
  • Choose the font size and angle.
  • Adjust the opacity within the available range.
  • Run Add Watermark and download the file.
  • Open the downloaded version and examine several representative pages.

A diagonal angle can make the label distinct from the document's normal text, but it is not a removal-proof security feature. Check that the complete word fits inside the page, especially on narrow pages or unusual orientations.

A review-copy example

Suppose a proposal has a short introductory page, a dense pricing table, and several diagrams. Apply DRAFT lightly, then inspect all three layouts. If the label masks a decimal point in the pricing table or a line in a diagram, reduce its visual weight or choose a more suitable size.

If a document uses dark full-page backgrounds, the tool's gray text may have poor contrast. This tool is designed for text stamps and does not offer every design control found in a full PDF editor. Do not assume a faint gray watermark will be visible on every possible background.

Check both screen and print output

Transparency can look different when printed, photocopied, or shown on a low-contrast display. If the document is meant to be printed, test a representative page. You want the status to remain visible while body text, punctuation, and chart labels stay readable.

The stamp is added over existing content. Low opacity lets that content show through, but it is not the same as moving a graphic behind all page objects. The underlying words remain in the PDF; watermarking is not redaction.

Keep an unstamped master

Save the watermarked output under a new filename, such as proposal-review-copy.pdf. Keep the original for future revisions and approved release. Repeated stamping can accumulate overlapping labels and create unnecessary confusion.

Editing a certificate-signed PDF can also affect signature validation. If the source must preserve a cryptographic signature, obtain a permitted review version rather than assuming a visible stamp is harmless.

Frequently asked questions

Does DRAFT stop someone copying text?

No. A visible watermark communicates status. It does not block copying, screenshots, printing, or authorized PDF editing.

Can I watermark only a selected section?

This tool stamps every page of its input. You can separate a section first, watermark that section, and merge the document again, checking order afterward.

Can I use an image logo here?

This tool accepts text rather than an image watermark. If a logo is required, use an editor that explicitly supports logo placement and inspect the final document.
